Blog 18 – 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines

This year’s theme is “Gifted to Give”

On March 16, 1521, Ferdinand Magellan sighted the eastern coast of Samar.

Exactly 500 years ago today, they landed in Homonhon, Samar and introduced Christianity to the natives.

March 31, 1521, the first mass was held on the Philippine shores.

A few days ago, March 14th, Pope Francis held a mass at the Saint Peter’s Basilica to celebrate the 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines.

The Spanish Navy ship, Juan Sebastián Elcano, is now sailing towards the Philippines from Guam, and it is expected to arrive in Cebu by April 2021, coinciding with the 500th anniversary of Ferdinand Magellan – Juan Sebastián Elcano expedition and the birth of Christianity in the Philippines.

Fun fact: 2 years ago I became a Knight of the Altar or a Sakristan in my school. I joined the KOA Club and served in our chapel.
